Shoen, Uemura, 1875-1949 (1875-1949)

Born in Kyoto. Given name Tsune. Attended Kyoto Prefectural School of Painting. Studied with Suzuki Shonen, Takeuchi Seiho, and Kono Bairei. Exhibited in Bunten. Member of Imperial Art Academy and Art Committee of the Imperial Household. Painter of bijin-ga. Received Order of Cultural Merit in 1948, the first woman to receive this award. Self-published prints include Waiting for the Moon (Machizuki) based on a 1944 painting of the same name, bijin-ga, and ghosts. Prints often carved by Okura Hanbei or Yamagishi Kazue; printed by Nishimura Kumakichi or Sato Kanjiro. Used a very small signature and seal.**
